Watermelon Man is a Koshare (Hopi clown) that the sculptor saw at a Kachina dance at the Hopi community of Moenkopi with her friend, Kate, whose mother lives at Moenkopi.

Kate and Susan sit on top of Kate’s uncle’s house and watch the dances in the courtyard below.

“Koshares mimic human excesses and frailties and are often quite naughty,” she says. “Watermelon Man represents gluttony - he may eat all the watermelon...or throw it at you.”

Watermelon Man is part of a series of sculptures based on Koshares that Kliewer has watched and enjoyed at Moenkopi. The other pieces in the series are:

Kliewer has also created a larger Koshare sculpture, Koshare Man, that is a fan favorite here in our gallery.
