Location, Fruita, Colorado: "The Grand Valley, my home in western Colorado, is surrounded on 3 sides by elevated country - the Grand Mesa to the east, Bookcliffs to the north, and the Uncompahgre Plateau to the south. When conditions are just right in wintertime, usually after we've had snow down in the valley, we can get what is known as a temperature inversion, which means the layer of air at the valley floor is cooler than the air at altitude. Typically it is the opposite - the closer you are to the ground the warmer the air. When this happens, the Colorado River "breathes" and the valley can fill up with fog. The phenomenon is particularly striking at sunrise, as seen in this piece." - Stephen C. Datz
