Springtime in the Rockies is always unpredictable, and a late-season storm has brought bitterly cold temperatures along with two feet of snow. Concerned because he knows his cows have already begun calving, a rancher's check on the herd has turned into a rescue mission. Having discovered a calf that became separated from its mother, he is cradling it in his arms and across his saddle, allowing his stout, reliable horse to carry them home. Combining all the elements that go into the successful raising of cattle in the West, this is a scene that could have taken place fifty or one hundred years ago . . . or yesterday.
