"We were sitting on the rooftop of our friend's uncle's house in Old Moenkopi. It was the Bean Dance, first dance of the summer season and we were honored to be there.

It was late afternoon and the young people were lining up ready to go down into the kiva for their initiation ceremony to become members of their kachina societies.

We weren't allowed to sketch or take photos, but when a beautiful Hopi girl paused at the top of the ladder, I knew I must remember that moment for myself and my friends."
