This weaving is in very good condition. There is faint spotting, and slight edge wear.
Ex Arizona collection. Ex Colorado collection. The owner inherited these textiles from his grandparents, who met in Minnesota and later moved to Arizona in 1915, where they opened some trading posts on the Navajo Nation.
In 1926, they relocated to Holbrook, Arizona, and opened a shop that the family would run until 1946. The shop would regularly receive visits from the Hopi and Navajo people. The Hopi often traded basketry, pottery, and peaches when they were ripe, and would sometimes stay overnight. The Navajo would sell wool by the pound, as well as weavings. The family's presence on the reservation was welcomed by the Navajo people, and they were sometimes hired to work at the trading post or herd sheep.
After the grandfather's passing in 1933, the grandmother continued to manage the store. She is remembered for her use of the sewing machine, making shirts, pants, and skirts for the Navajo people, who often gifted her the materials.
