Framed measurements are 17" x 11.5". Acquired from private collector in Arizona. The owner, now in his 70s, had acquired it from a friend about 50 years ago. The friend had inherited it from her grandmother. Johannes Oertel was a portrait and religious painter, an engraver, a teacher, and a clergyman. He was born in Germany. He studied art at the Polytechnic Institute of Bavaria and in Munich with J. M. Enzing-Muller. In 1848, he emigrated to Newark, New Jersey. Seven years later he moved to New York City, and then 3 years later, he was living in Washington DC. He did the design and ceiling painting in the skylight of the House of Representatives. He lived briefly in Rhode Island before serving in the Civil War. In 1871, he became an ordained Episcopal priest. He served in parishes in North Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, and New York. In 1887, he was a chairman of Christian Art at the University of the South in Tennessee. From 1889 through 1891, he was a fine arts instructor at Washington University in St, Louis, and he continued to do artwork for churches as well. He later returned to Washington DC, and lived in that region including Maryland and Virginia. He died in Vienna, Virginia in 1909.
