27.0The Arizona Historical Advisory Commission selected Deborah Copenhaver-Fellows, National Sculpture Society, to create a life-size statue of Barry Goldwater for the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall Collection, which was gifted by the state of Arizona in 2015. The bronze statue depicts Goldwater during his tenure as United States Senator. Wearing a suit with cowboy boots and a southwestern bolo tie, he stands in a casual pose as if in mid-conversation, gesturing with his right hand; his left hand in the pocket of his pants. Barry Goldwater served five terms in the United States Senate representing Arizona and was the 1964 Republican candidate for President of the United States. He was born on January 2, 1909, in Phoenix. He graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and studied at the University of Arizona in Tucson. During World War II, Goldwater served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force in the Asiatic Theater from 1941 to 1945. He joined the Air Force Reserve after the war and founded the Arizona Air National Guard. He retired with the rank of major general in 1967.
