SOLD Harry G. Aitken (1867-1952) - Country Landscape

13.5" x 15.5" framed. Hand carved gold frame. Acquired from a private collection in Arizona. Aitken was born in Trenton, New Jersey. He studied pottery under Walter S. Lenox. He was later employed by Trenton China, Crescent Pottery, Trenton Pottery, and finally Onondaga Pottery (now Syracuse China). He was a designer and head of the decorating department for the Onondaga Pottery Company. He spent 44 years there prior to his retirement in 1946. He was supervising the largest china decorating force in the U.S. He had a congenial nature and a willingness to share his time and knowledge of art by giving free lessons. He was then affectionately known as "Pop" throughout the factory. He was known for his "Nature Study Series," which are still being produced today. He took art lessons from John F. Carlson in Woodstock, New York, and also with H. Leigh-Ross and Lester Stevens in Rockport, Massachusetts. He exhibited his oils and watercolors at the Syracuse Museum of Art. He also entered paintings in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Woodstock shows. He was a member of the Printmakers Club and also the Associated Artists of Syracuse. He also enjoyed fishing and playing baseball.
