Paul Saufkie (1898–1993) Biography

Paul Saufkie was a Hopi silversmith that pioneered overlay techniques seen in contemporary Native American jewelry to this day. After his father taught him the craft in the 20’s, Paul in turn started to teach silversmithing to returning soldiers that fought in the Second World War.

In 1949 Paul, with friend and painter Fred Kabotie, created the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild. This organization trained many Hopi silversmiths in the 1950’s, provided materials, a place to work, and even financial support. The success of this institution cemented Paul’s place in the identity of Hopi jewelry.
