Artist Statement
"With a perception forged by the surreal qualities of the Sonoran desert, I find myself preoccupied with the southwestern landscape. The desert is a powerful and strange location. A place of stark contrast. The rocky buttes and lack of water create a foreboding atmosphere. However, the wide open skies counter this, light shifting, clouds swirling, creating an unparalleled state of meditation.
The sparse quality of the desert has made it an ideal proving ground for artists. Its appears empty but look closer and it begins to come to life. Capturing the power and nuance of the desert in oil paint is my foremost goal.
I strive to create images that are as eternal as the mountains themselves and as ephemeral as the light cast through the clouds. Taking the forms before me, I transmute them into graphic representations that are bolder, more immediately readable, and charged with contrast. I aim to not only represent the immediate visual qualities of the land but also the subtle qualities of the atmosphere and mood that a photograph or straight-forward rendering cannot."
