"Over the years, donkeys have carried explorers, prospectors, and settlers through the wilderness of the western frontier. Miners and loggers found the donkey willing to work long hours and carry heavy loads. I recently made a trip to Oatman, Arizona to photograph the free-roaming burros who live here...this mother and her baby were so adorable I just had to do a sculpture! Today, thousands of feral burros graze on public and private land. They have escaped into the wilderness ever since the days of the Spanish explorers." - Susan Kliewer
