Wolfkiller (c. 1855-1926) was a Navajo herdsman and plant/medicine expert who lived in the Monument Valley area of Navajo country. He had an expansive knowledge of plants, including which ones could be used as medicine and which could be used as food.

His story was translated and recorded by trader Louisa Wade Wetherill, who believed that Wolfkiller’s life lessons in plants, history, ceremonies, and life lessons would benefit future generations.

Wolfkiller shared his stories with Wetherill for years. She completed her manuscript in 1932, but it was rejected by publishers of the time.

Today, Wolfkiller’s stories are recognized for their value, especially as modern life continues to live farther and farther away from nature.
