"General George Crook called them the "Tigers of the Human Race." Three bands and several sub-bands occupied Southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico, resisting Spanish, then Mexican, and finally American domination for centuries.
The U.S. Army employed Apache scouts, including Chiricahua Warriors, in their relentless pursuit of Mangas, Nana, Geronimo and their followers. Geronimo and his twenty warriors surrendered in 1886, after being chased by one-third of the frontier army. In 1913, the surviving 271 Chiricahua at Fort Sill, Oklahoma were set free." - Susan Kliewer
