Prairie Buddha features an inquisitive prairie dog surveying its surroundings.
Sculptor Veryl Goodnight is well-acquainted with the mannerisms and behavior of prairie dogs because she had one for a time as a pet, before releasing him back into the wild.
In her book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight, she tells the story of her prairie dog companion, Petie, and his reaction to meeting Roger, the man who would eventually become the sculptor’s husband:
Roger was the typical confirmed bachelor and only came to my home out of curiosity about my pet prairie dog, Petie. Petie had just come into puberty and I was part of his family group known as a “coterie.”
Roger was definitely not welcome as far as Petie was concerned. The two-pound prairie dog won more than one battle with the 225-pound pilot.
In spite of losing a good deal of blood to Petie, Roger helped devise an elaborate release system to help integrate Petie into a nearby prairie dog colony.
Prairie Buddha is an unlimited bronze edition.
