Pathfinders features three wolves on the hunt.
According to Goodnight in her book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight, wolves are among the most challenging subjects she has ever sculpted.
In particular, the artist conducted extensive research to ensure that she captured the subtleties that make a wolf different from dogs. In the course of her research, Goodnight hiked with three 98% wolf-dogs, watched wolves in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park, studied with Dr. James Halfpenny from the Yellowstone Institutes, and observed “Ghengis,” a wolf at a refuge near the Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico.
The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago commissioned Goodnight to enlarge the three wolves of Pathfinders to 15% over life-size. Other installations of the monumental work include the Pritzker Family Children's Zoo in Chicago, the Wildlife Experience Museum near Denver, and the Leanin’ Tree Sculpture Garden in Boulder, Colorado.
There are two other versions of Pathfinders available:
