Veryl Goodnight's love of horses began early. In her book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight, the artist says:

I must have been born loving horses. I was told my first spoken word was "Italian," as I excitedly pointed to a horse. It is this love for horses and all other animals, plus a childhood in the Colorado mountains that inspires my art.

In Cowgirl, the sculptor depicts a young rider confidently astride a beloved horse. Owning a horse was Goodnight's dream as a young girl, though she did not have the means to have a horse of her own until years later.
