This day was only my second trip to Sabino in the evening, and my wife and I took a walk out into the desert to go see the “crowned” saguaro that grows near the visitor center. As we walked, the sun sank below the western horizon and the long shadow of night began its slow march eastward, gradually eclipsing the landscape at the mouth of Sabino Canyon. As the light reddened, the ridges on either side of the canyon positively glowed, and I was intrigued by how the light played on them while the tall, shaded saguaros created a striking vertical counterpoint in the foreground. There are many reasons I love the Sonoran Desert as a subject, but this kind of light and drama are chief among them. Fun trivia fact: I find saguaro cacti, especially when one is close to them and can see surface detail, to be one of the most challenging subjects I paint." -Stephen C. Datz
