This sculpture is the maquette (i.e., the study) for Veryl Goodnight’s Pathfinders, which features three wolves tracking and hunting.
Goodnight considers wolves to be one of the most difficult subjects she has ever sculpted.
In her book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight, the artist discusses the extensive research she needed to ensure that she captured the animal’s anatomy and movements. Her research included:
- Hiking with three 98% wolf-dogs
- Studying with Dr. James Halfpenny of the Yellowstone Institutes
- Observing wolves in Yellowstone National Park’s Lamar Valley in winter
- Watching and sketching “Ghengis,” a wolf at a refuge in New Mexico
Goodnight enlarged the three individual wolves to 15% over life-size for a commission from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. Other installations of these monumental sculptures include the Leanin’ Tree Sculpture Garden in Colorado, the Pritzker Family Children's Zoo in Chicago, and the Wildlife Experience Museum near Denver.
