Born in 1938, Rotraut Moquay grew up in Rerik, East Germany. She is the younger sister of renowned artist Gunther Uecker.

In the early 1950’s, she ran away from her quaint fishing village with the hopes of becoming an artist. After meeting the young French artist Yves Klein in 1957, Rotraut moved to Paris and launched her extensive career as an artist. The couple married in 1962. In 1968 she met and married art curator Daniel Moquay.

Her work has been featured across the globe, including solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Rotraut’s pieces span multiple mediums, from paintings to plastic sculptures, always brimming with vibrant hues and a sense of optimism.

Currently, Rotraut’s primary studio is located in Arizona, though she also lives and works in Paris and Sydney.
