Ex California collection. \n\nHelen Hardin, a Santa Clara artist, was born to Herbert Hardin and Pablita Velarde. Unfortunately, because her father was Anglo and her mother was Indigenous, her mixed-race identity made her an outcast on both sides of her family and the Santa Clara Pueblo that she grew up in. This led to her being excluded from important traditions, such as ceremonial dances. Her mother, Pablita, was a well-known artist, and in turn, Hardin fell in love with painting. She attended high school in Albuquerque, then studied art history and anthropology at the University of New Mexico. After a brief time studying weaving and textile design at the University of Arizona, she eventually returned to painting. Her artwork was more modern than traditional Native paintings, and she focused on colorful abstracts of Native American daily life and hardship. In 1962, Hardin had her first solo exhibition at Coronado Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and another in 1964 at Enchanted Mesa Trading Post in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hardin's increasing fame strained her relationship with her divorced mother, with whom she was competing professionally. Due to their hostile relationship, Hardin decided to leave her home to stay with her father in Bogot‡, Colombia, to create space between herself and her mother. There, her father arranged a solo exhibition for Hardin in 1968, where 27 of her paintings sold. Following this incredible feat, she received multiple awards, including First Prize for Innovation at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in 1969, and the Avery Memorial Prize at the Heard Museum in 1975.
