This weaving was originally purchased by Colonel Sydney Tate, it is believed that he purchased this after returning from the Korean War during the early 1950s. He had this along with other textiles in his collection until his death in 2002 at the age of 94. Tate's family were some of the earliest settlers in Northwest Alabama. Tate would have had numerous dealings with the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Native Americans. One of the early Tate family members was Jesse L. Tate, who served as an officer under General Andrew Jackson and General John Coffee during the War of 1812. In 1821, he is listed as a Captain in the Alabama militia.
