Southwest Art Sept 2013, page 45. Artist comment: The young woman was a member of an agricultural “commune,” which seems to have been a phenomenon mostly of the late 1960’s. I spent a couple afternoons at the commune following around some other kids. I was shooting one of my first stories for National Geographic, running in July 1974 as “Vermont-A State of Mind.” The young woman on the step had just come out of the kitchen to call the other residents to dinner. I don’t remember anything else about her. This picture was not used in the magazine (though it was a runner-up for the cover). In 1988 National Geographic produced a photography book and exhibition named “Odyssey-The Art of Photography at National Geographic.” I had three pictures in the show, yours is on page 131.
