Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Sublette.
Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My professional training was as a physician, which I enjoyed, but realized art was my true calling. This became clear when the stacks of reading material at my beside went from medical to the art world. I recognized a new adventure lay ahead if I was willing to take that path, which I did. That was 26 years ago and have never looked back.
I own Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson and specialize in Antique Native American Art, Western Art, the Contemporary art of the west and my favorite artist Maynard Dixon. I found Dixon’s work so compelling that I opened a museum for his life’s work where I have on display over 150 pieces of original artwork.
In my spare time I began writing Murder Mysteries, the “Charles Bloom Murder Mystery Series” I have six books in the series, which are available on e-book, hardback and audible. Through my novels, I get to use my medical and art training to explore my creative itch.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle was starting, getting artists to believe you are in it for the long haul and understand the nuances of running an art gallery and what involves. Once I was able to get a few stellar artists the path cleared for others to come aboard. I still represent the initial artists who had faith in me and appreciate greatly their willingness to take a chance on a young gallerist.
