16" x 19.5" framed. Acquired from a private collection in New York. This painting was obtained from Vinnie Johnson (Frank Tenney's widow) in 1943 by artist William Krehm (Johnson's good friend and framer). Mr. Krehm sold the painting to collector Bill Riffle in 1963. Mr. Riffle was a close, personal friend of many western painters including Olaf Wieghorst, Conrad Buff, and James Swinnerton. Most of the Wyoming landscapes of these artists were exhibited in 1986 at the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum (Cody, Wyoming) at the Rim Rock Years exhibit. The majority of the paintings in this exhibit were unsigned, but each featured an authenticity certificate by William Krehm on the reverse, including this painting by Frank Tenney Johnson. The collection of paintings was used as a source of reference for author Harold McCracken in his well-known book on the artist, "The Frank Tenney Johnson Book: The Life and Work of a Master Painter of the Old West" (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1974). Artist Jimmy Swinnerton was aware of the collection, and a copy of a letter discussing this collection of paintings will accompany this painting. A copy of the Rim Rock Exhibit catalog is also included.
