First in Bodmer-Catlin Series.Call for price and availability. Resides in the Phoenix Art Museum's permanent collection. Winner 2004 Cowboy Artists of America Gold Medal, Artist Choice, and Kieckhefer awards.Monumental size is 7'3" x 4' x 2' in an Edition of 9. Maquette size is sold out. In the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, historian/painters Karl Bodmer and George Catlin set out to capture the images of the people of a new land. Today, these highly detailed portraits are some of the only records an artist like myself has to draw on for historical accuracy from this pre-photo era. For my new series, the Bodmer/Catlin documentaries, I will be using the portraits created in the 1830s of individuals from some of the tribes that Lewis and Clark encountered during their 1804 - 1806 expedition and some 25 years later were documented by Bodmer and Catlin. It is not my intention to add or take away from these works, but to interpret in my sculptural style a three dimensional portrait that will be a respectful complement to the original paintings. My first piece in this Series is a full figure of "Addih-Hiddisch, Hidatsa Chief" as painted in 1833 by Karl Bodmer. Bodmer wrote of his subject that he was a great warrior and chief and the geometric patterns on his body were tattoos, not paint. He wore a Euro-American hat, carried a trade tomahawk with a scalp lock attached and a peace medal around his neck. 3 left in the edition.
