"For centuries there existed a trail through Aravaipa Canyon in Arizona that was used by the Apaches for their raiding forays into northern Mexico. Warriors would return with loot that included horses, mules, cattle, and even captive women and children. After the reservation at San Carlos was established in 1872 many Apache braves found it hard to give up the old ways and continued to use the ancient routes south." - Susan Kliewer
