Rose Gonzales is the sister of Pomasena Sanchez, wife of Robert Gonzales, and mother of three; Jose H. Rainbird Gonzlaes, Tse-Pe, and Marie Gonzales Yazzie. She was born in San Juan pueblo, but learned pottery in San Ildefonso pueblo from her mother-in-law, Ramona Sanchez Gonzales. Rose and her sister were adopted by Mary Cata, as their parents had died in a swine flu epidemic. Rose Gonzales is recognized as the innovator of deep carved pottery around 1930 in San Ildefonso pueblo. In the 1930s and 1940s, she made pottery mostly to trade for food to help feed 11 people in her family. She has won several awards dating from 1965 through 1980 and she has exhibited at various art shows and museums to include the Santa Fe Indian Market, Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial, New Mexico State Fair, Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, and the Albuquerque Museum.
