Julian Lovato (b. 1922)

Lovato is a traditionally trained silversmith who became an early practitioner of modern Native design while working at Frank Patania's Thunderbird Shop.  Born at Kewa (Santo Domingo Pueblo), Lovato is known for his heavy and high quality silver work and for top quality turquoise and coral.  As one of the outstanding silversmiths of the Thunderbird Shop, he was greatly influenced by Patania's modernist aesthetic.  Lovato simplified and updated traditional patterns as well a creating fresh, new designs, and became adept at creating a three dimensional look that he called "raised, dimensional jewelry design."
