Born in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, California, Robert Brackbill was first introduced to woodworking in high school.  After a series of summer jobs as an apprentice carpenter, a friend asked Robert to help him to build a sail boat. As a result of this experience, Robert acquired two sets of useful skills, finish woodworking and marine carpentry.

After building the boat, he helped his friends to sail the boat - which is now named the 'Fairwind' to Kona, Hawaii - on the Big Island - and a new business was started called 'Fairwind Sail and Dive' which Robert skippered for a number of years.

While living on the Big Island of Hawaii, Robert started making wood jewelry boxes as a hobby.  To his delight, he was invited to show his work in several galleries throughout the Islands.

On the Island of Kauai, one of his boxes was shown to Tony Lydgate, the author of several books featuring contemporary American Box makers.  Robert's "Koa Chest" was featured in Tony's  book , 'The Art of Making Elegant Jewelry Boxes' a Sterling/Chapelle book.

Robert is now living in Arizona and enjoys working with the local woods and other highly figured woods throughout the U.S.  Robert takes pride in his careful selection of the most dramatic pieces of wood; along with his flawless workmanship, the 'Tigers Eye' quality of the wood is brought to life in each box he creates.
