Leslie Scruggs was born and raised in the south side of Chicago. He has been reaching sculpture for over 30 years, first in Chicago and now in northern Michigan. Scruggs went to Belize in Central America where he learned to carve from working with the incredible Belizean craftsmen who made beautiful mahogany sailboats. “Indirect sculpture is sculpture where the final material is different from its original material. Usually clay or wax is the original material which is later cast into a more durable material such as bronze or fiberglass. Both methods have their advantages. Working with clay one can make many attempts. Direct sculpture has more spontaneity and does not require expensive casting. And of course one cannot cast in solid wood. My preference has always been direct sculpture, and direct sculpture by carving…” – Leslie Scruggs
